Optometry – including optometrists and dispensing opticians – now forms part of the Ministry of Health’s Hauora Haumi Allied Health Report.

First published in 2024, the report provides an overview of the allied health professions in New Zealand. It was initiated in 2023 when the chief allied health professions officer convened sector reference groups for 14 allied health professions to understand the unique contributions of each and identify key barriers and opportunities.

The Ministry of Health says the report keeps stakeholders informed about the knowledge and skills within the professions and addresses untapped potential, opportunities and challenges. It also points out the benefits of access to allied health services and the need for new models of care and service delivery.

Suzanne Halpin, Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board CE and registrar, said she was pleased to see optometry included as an addendum to the report. “It’s encouraging to see the profession recognised as part of wider health system planning and it underlines the important role optometrists and dispensing opticians play in supporting the health of our communities.”

The report now includes a snapshot of 16 allied health professions, including optometry.
