Attracting attention on Paragon Care’s Designs for Vision (DFV) stand was a new, small pachymeter, Occuity’s PM1 Pachymeter, being unveiled for the first time in New Zealand and Australia.

It is the world’s only handheld, non-contact optical pachymeter, allowing eyecare professionals to measure central corneal thickness (CCT) in mere seconds, said DFV’s Gian Victoria. “Unlike other pachymeters, it’s quick, easy and portable, so you can transfer it from room to room.”

As there’s no need to anaesthetise or touch the eye, it reduces the risk of infection and makes the whole process far more comfortable, safer and quicker for both the operator and the patient, said Occuity. “(It) provides the measuring and non-contact capabilities of existing optical desktop devices at a price point comparable to the handheld contacting ultrasound devices… (delivering) reliable, repeatable CCT measurements with a target accuracy of ±10 microns.” Weighing 345g and measuring just 17.5cm in length, it comfortably fits in one hand, it said, while its touchscreen interface makes it easy and intuitive to use. “Healthcare professionals can become proficient with just a few minutes of practice. (There’s) no consumables, no waste, no waiting.”

But that’s not all, said Victoria, in two-to-three months’ time, DFV is hoping to launch Occuity’s AX1 Axiometer, allowing optometrists to measure axial length with a similar, compact, portable handheld non-contact device. “That will be a game changer for myopia management.”
