Vitamin D supplementation could be an adjuvant treatment to alleviate the signs and symptoms of dry eye (DED), reported authors of a new study from China.

Writing in Contact Lens & Anterior Eye, researchers from Nanjing University said they performed a meta-analysis of eight studies on the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in patients with DED. They found vitamin D supplementation improved tear production (SMD 1.43, 95% CI 0.81, 2.05, p=0.000) and tear film stability (SMD 1.19, 95% CI 0.83, 1.55, p=0.000) and reduced lid hyperaemia (SMD -0.71, 95% CI -1.09, -0.32, p=0.000) and OSDI scores.

Further studies regarding vitamin D’s most appropriate administration and dosage need to be conducted, they said.
