American singer-songwriter Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (Halsey) received a slew of new autoimmune disease diagnoses after giving birth to her first child in 2021, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), Sjögren's syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).

Sharing her health struggles on her Instagram story, the popstar said she had suffered from autoimmune issues most of her life. “I'm still looking for the root cause of some of these things. It could potentially be another type of auto-immune disease. I've known about auto-immune issues for most of my life, especially having endometriosis."

Born in 1994, Halsey started writing music when she was 17. Around this time, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, had dropped out of community college and was experiencing a period of financial hardship, substance abuse and homelessness on the streets of New York. Initially posting her songs online, she eventually signed with her first music label and released her debut studio album, Badlands, in 2015. Her biggest hits include the Chainsmokers collaboration Closer (2016) and Without Me (2018).

The name Halsey comes from Halsey Street Subway Station in Brooklyn, a place where she spent a lot of time as a teenager.
