Researchers have found Japanese teenagers with high myopia reported significantly more dryness, less photophobia and less pain than those with no myopia.
Ranging from 10-19 years old, 106 participants were assessed for myopia, astigmatic error, anisometropia, intraocular pressure, tear film breakup time and fluorescein staining. A questionnaire recorded dryness, irritation, pain, fatigue, blurring and photophobia.
Presenting the findings on a poster at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology’s 2022 annual meeting, Dr Osama Ibrahim Hirayama, from Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, said the study indicated that dry eye disease (DED) might be associated with high myopia in teenagers.
