The American Optometric Association (AOA) has launched Blink Land, a single-player mobile game that teaches players about eye health and its relation to screen time.
Despite being aware of the eye-health effects of long periods of screen time, 54% of America’s 227 million gamers fail to have a comprehensive annual eye exam, said the AOA. The free Blink Land game demonstrates tangible actions players can take to protect their eyes, such as using the 20-20-20 rule, blinking frequently and setting up their screens properly, along with reminders to book yearly eye exams, it said.
A 2022 New Zealand study found smartphones were an effective tool to measure blink exercise compliance.
