Blue-light IOLs for glaucoma?

A large international study has found cataract patients fitted with blue-light-filtering intraocular lenses (BLF-IOLs) had favourable glaucoma outcomes compared to those receiving non-BLF IOLs.

Led by Dr Idan Hecht from the University of Helsinki, Finland, and the Shamir Medical Center, Israel, the research team assessed 11,028 patients, 47% of whom received BLF-IOLs during uneventful cataract surgery between 2008 and 2018. Patients fitted with BLF-IOLs showed improved glaucoma-free survival rates, a lower ratio of glaucoma development and better glaucoma-procedure-free survival rates, they reported in June’s Journal of Glaucoma. They also noted, however, that BLF-IOLs showed no significant advantage in patients with pre-existing glaucoma.
