Understanding enucleation

October 30, 2020 Staff reporters

Melbourne’s Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital has partnered with the World Association of Eye Hospitals (WAEH) and other leading eye care institutions, including the UK’s Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Kellogg Eye Centre in the US, to improve patient understanding about enucleation and living with an artificial eye

Mitchell Wilson, a nurse unit manager at Melbourne’s Eye and Ear, has an artificial eye and is championing the collaboration, which has developed educational resources for patients facing enucleation surgery. He said he was often called upon to talk about the realities of living with an artificial eye with patients facing surgery and, whilst he’s always happy to talk to them, he said he felt more resources would fulfil a broader need, both locally and internationally.

The education package includes enucleation and evisceration information, FAQs and videos and is available here: https://www.eyeandear.org.au/page/Patients/Patient_Information_Hub/Eyes/Enucleation_and_Evisceration/
