Dr Trevor Gray and the Re:Vision team have gifted nearly 500 slit-lamp shields to optometrists across the country as they readied themselves to reopen to patients from the move to Alert Level 2.

“These custom shields will protect both the patients and the clinical team who will be using equipment that requires them to get up close to the patient to inspect their eyes,” said Dr Trevor Gray in a Re:Vision Facebook post. “This is just our way of supporting the optometrists as they return to their practices after the Covid-19 lockdown period.”

The Auckland-based anterior segment surgery sourced the slit-lamp shields locally and trialled them before offering them to optometrists around the country.

At the time of going to press, 473 shields had been distributed with more requests coming in every day, said Dr Gray. “Having used these slit-lamp shields ourselves and realising how simple and effective they are at creating a safer work environment, it was a no-brainer to offer these to others.”
