Many patients with retinal pathology will benefit from cataract surgery to improve media clarity and contrast. In these patients, accurate biometry is essential to guide precise intraocular lens (IOL) choice and allow our patients to achieve the best visual outcome. Retina Specialists now has the latest leading biometry machine, the IOL Master 700 from Zeiss.

“We are very excited to have the IOL Master 700,” said Dr Leo Sheck, a director of Retina Specialists. “The state-of-the-art technology in this machine will translate to a much more precise result for our cataract patients. It has real-time foveal tracking by OCT, and this is crucial as many of our retinal patients do not fixate perfectly. The central tomography ensures our axis measurement is accurate for toric IOL. This machine also directly measures posterior corneal curvature, which both improves the accuracy of IOL calculation using the Barrett suite, and also highlights corneal changes such as previous laser refractive surgery.

“Our technician Zanelle finds the IOL Master 700 to be much quicker than older biometry machines. This is especially important for many of our older patients requiring multiple scans. Often they find the position difficult during imaging and fixation and concentration can start to fade with prolonged scanning time. With the IOL Master 700, our team is able to complete the required measurements accurately in less than one minute.”

Since the installation of the IOL Master 700 at the beginning of March, the team at Retina Specialists is already seeing how useful this equipment is. “I recall seeing a patient who presented wanting cataract surgery with toric IOL, but did not mention previous refractive surgery,” said Dr Sheck. “The keratometry values were lower than average and the machine picked up an abnormal ratio of the anterior to posterior corneal curvature ratio and suggested previous corneal refractive surgery, which as you know is crucial in surgical planning.”

With the IOL Master 700, Retina Specialists is able to offer one of the most precise biometry measurements for cataract surgery. Your patients will not only receive the warm and generous care Retina Specialists is known for, but also the best technology and expertise to achieve their desired refractive outcome, no matter what their retinal conditions may be.
