Essilor’s new Stellest lens slows down myopia progression in children by more than 60%, the company reported, unveiling the results of its one-year trial at the World Society of Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Worldwide Connect 2020 virtual congress.

The lens marks a new era of innovation in this field, said Norbert Gorny, co-chief operating officer, Essilor International. “The interim results are impressive, confirming the positive impact of this solution on myopic children and making us fully confident that the Stellest lens will be one of the most effective myopia control spectacle lenses in the world.”

Essilor’s ongoing three-year clinical trial includes 167 myopic children and started in 2018. According to its data, after one year, children wearing the Stellest lenses saved more than half a dioptre of myopia degree on average, equating to a 60% reduction in myopia progression compared with the control group wearing single vision lenses. Axial length elongation was prevented in 28% of the children wearing Stellest lenses, while it occurred in all control group children. All those wearing Stellest lenses had clear vision, adapted to their new lenses within a week and were satisfied with their quality of vision, reported the company.
